“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. And to write about it afterwards…
But the great affair is to move, to feel the needs and hitches of life a little more early, to get down of this feather’s bed of civilisation, and to find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints.”

Robert Louis Stevenson “Travel with a donkey in the Cevennes”.

stevenson way walking in france

This young scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson left Monastier sur Gazeille on the 22 of September and arrived 12 days and many adventures later at Saint Jean du Gard, a few 220…

Weird Paris: Saints and Sinners

Now, let’s go raise some spirits! (La Nuit, T. Brack’s archives)

By Theadora Brack

Calling all saints and sinners: Snuggle tight because it is time to crack open my slim, spellbound volume of spirited adventures in Paris for another retelling. For tricks, I’ve added a few new tales and photographs. I’ve also got the flashlights, pillows, and blankets, along with the marshmallows and bubbly for toasting. Here are eleven of my favorite spooky grounds.

Now, let’s go raise some spirits!

1. The Unknown Celebrity of the Seine

Among the artsy clutter that once adorned nearly every artist’s lair was a plaster face with a mysterious smile. These were cast from a famous death mask called “L’inconnue de la Seine,” made from an unknown 16-year-old who washed up on the…

From Prehistoric times the rocky promontory, which overlooks the Ouvèze, sheltered a fortified village of the Voconces tribe.During the 13th century a medieval town took shape just below the castle, which was built by the Counts of Toulouse. The most visible surviving buildings are the 14th century ramparts and the Belfry with its 18thcentury wrought-iron tower.

A walk through the medieval town’s narrow streets should include the Cathedral, the castle, the Place du Vieux-Marché……

The fishing village of Port-en-Bessin ( a strategic oil harbour in 1944 )  has retained its charm and authenticity and is popular for its lively ambiance.

This coastline, alternating long beaches and high cliffs, is laden with the Landings’ history .This little town of Calvados was liberated in the few hours that followed the D-Day on 6th June 1944 . This area suffered litle damage from the fights that occured during the Normandy Invasion.

Today it is a popular holiday destination that perfectly combines heritage and modernity.

Santiago de Compostela

Santiago Compostela

Compostela747

Buildings covered in lichen reveal the rainy nature of Santiago de Compostela

I reached Santiago at dusk to a rainstorm. I learned later, after looking at many ancient buildings covered in lichen, that it often rains in Santiago. A pop of the umbrella and a quick walk up hill from the train station led me to the San Carlos Hotel, a spotless place where I put in for the night.

See hotel review.

From the hotel I went out for supper and then in the morning, walked to my lodging, the Campanas de San Juan, just a half block from the main church.  See hotel review

Compostela723

Santiago de Compostela appeared a magic place. The lichen shrouded buildings, ornate church interiors, narrow cobble streets, and exotic food shops and restaurants made my visit intriguing to say the least.

Compostela725

This was truly a different culture and country, even for me who lives in Mexico among many indigenous cultures, languages, customs, and legends.

Compostela728

The legends swirling around the baroque churches, hidden reliquaries, ancient inscensors, and well-worn pilgrimage trails left me in awe.

Compostela743

Gaunt pilgrims with their crooked staffs and faces showing fatigue but elation at having reached this place after walking the age-old trails through Europe added to the magic.
